"You have had a big impact on our child and we are very thankful."
- Kadiatou's mother
Kadiatou lives with her father and mother in Conakry in a household of six people. Her father is a builder and her mother sells small spices. Kadiatou is fortunate to be able to attend public school and she is enrolled in a women’s clothing course. The home situation is very challenging, and her parents need help in providing school supplies and food for their children. Her parents enrolled her in MindLeaps and have been pleased with the program and its impact on Kadiatou.
Kadiatou's story.
Before joining the MindLeaps program in 2018, 16-year-old Kadiatou had been living with her uncle outside Conakry. She came to the city to live with her mother and help sell fruit in the market. They lived on very limited means in a makeshift house, with no door or windows. When her mother fell ill and went away to recover, Kadiatou was left to live with her grandmother. In all this time, she had never attended school, and when her family learned about MindLeaps, she came to the center to enroll.
Kadiatou was among the best students in her dance class and after she successfully completed the program, MindLeaps sponsored her to begin vocational training in sewing and tailoring in 2019. Kadiatou had to take time off from her training when she was pregnant. Once her baby was born, she returned to classes and is now handling both school and the responsibilities of being a new mother. MindLeaps continues to provide support, and has arranged permission with the training center for her to take an extended break each day so she can go home to nurse her infant son. She’s now in her second year of vocational studies and is looking forward to getting her diploma.
Kadiatou says she misses the activities at the MindLeaps center. And in fact, she comes by whenever she can to join in informally with others in class so she can keep up the dancing she loves!
