Sonia
Age: 16
Last Year of School : 6th Grade
Hobbies: Learning English
Sponsorship Need: Secondary School ($1,000)
Sonia loves to learn and hopes to have the opportunity to continue studying.
Sonia is 16 years old and was in the third group of girls to join MindLeaps, in 2016. She is currently a day program student in grade 7 at APACE School. She lives with her parents and two younger siblings (one little brother and one little sister). She also has an older sister, Solange, who joined MindLeaps at the same time as her.
Sonia is a very independent and expressive girl and is one of the most talented dancers at MindLeaps. She joined the performing group just six months after joining MindLeaps and since then she has performed at lots of events including the Ubumuntu festival. Sonia loves participating in events like these and describes it as “being in another world”. She loves ballet and contemporary dance and enjoys creating duos with Gisele or the boys. Sonia is also a teaching assistant in the MindLeaps dance classes. Her favourite part of having this responsibility is getting the students ready to perform at the big events and special performances in the MindLeaps centre. However, she says it can be challenging at times, especially when the children do not follow her instructions or are arguing with each other.
Sonia has also been integrated with another international dance program in Kigali, where she has met lots of other like minded young people with a passion for dance. She loves these classes and attends once a week. Sonia was selected to attend these classes because she is extremely talented and passionate about dance (especially ballet!).
Sonia is doing well at school but much prefers dance over studying. Her favourite subject is geography. Sonia’s best friends are Gisele and Sifa, who are also teaching assistants at MindLeaps and are in the performing group, too.
Since joining MindLeaps, Sonia has noticed several changes in herself. First, she has made lots of friends, which she did not have before. She has also learned English from scratch but has come on leaps and bounds over the past few years and now feels confident using and speaking English in any situation! Last, Sonia is grateful for the dance skills she has gained thanks to MindLeaps. It has sparked a passion in her so deep that she dreams of becoming a famous professional dancer in the future. We are excited to see Sonia continue to blossom as a young woman, dancer and friend!
